Since WSSC Water regulates plumbers within Montgomery and Prince George's counties, we are unable to contract directly with the plumbers to replace water service lines. Instead, WSSC Water has contracted with a consultant known as the Lead Free Group, which will coordinate and work directly with homeowners and plumbers to perform the replacement and restoration.

  • If lead is found on the WSSC Water-owned portion of the water service line, then WSSC Water will replace that portion at no cost to the homeowner.

  • If lead is found on the customer-owned portion of the water service line, then we recommend the customer replace the pipe. WSSC Water is developing a financial assistance program to cover the cost of pipe replacement and minimal restoration for those participating in our program.

  • If a customer replaces their water service line before our financial assistance program is finalized, they’ll need to notify WSSC Water as the EPA requires that we coordinate that work with any required work on the utility side. It is uncertain at this time to what extent funds will be available to reimburse the homeowner if they replace the pipe on their own.

  • Once replacement of a water service line is complete, customers will need to follow guidance on flushing, sampling and filtering to ensure small lead particles are not present in their drinking water.

As of November 1, 2025, the replacement program is still in development. Once it’s finalized, the Lead Free Group will reach out to customers with verified lead or Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR) service lines and make arrangements for the replacement.
