Some galvanized water service pipes on private property may not pose a problem. But if there is—or ever was—a lead service line connecting the water main to your private pipe, it's possible that your pipe could have captured lead released upstream, which could then be released into your drinking water.

Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR)

If the public-side service line is or was made of lead, there is a possibility that lead particles could have traveled from the lead line and accumulated in the downstream galvanized pipe. These lead particles could then be released into the water passing through the galvanized pipe, making replacement necessary. If there are no definitive records regarding the complete history of the upstream service line, the galvanized pipe is classified as requiring replacement.

Galvanized NOT Requiring Replacement

A customer-side galvanized service line that has never been downstream of a lead service line does not require replacement, as no lead would have passed through it.

Non-Galvanized Requiring Replacementspanish non-GRR
